World Green Roof Congress
15-16 September 2010
London U.K.

Call for Papers:

The World Green Roof Congress in 2010 will showcase green roofs and green walls, and how we can progress their delivery and achieve their mainstream inclusion in buildings. The Congress will also focus on what can be done to fully exploit the multiple benefits of green roofs and adapt to a changing climate.

The Congress committee are looking for papers, presentations and case studies that demonstrate the delivery of green roofs and green walls providing a diverse range of benefits, and the evidence base to demonstrate that they not only look aesthetically pleasing but bring significant socio and economic benefits.

The Congress is keen to have papers and presentations that cover the themes listed below.

Please refer to page three for guidance on format for your abstract submission. From the submitted abstracts CIRIA and Livingroofs.org will ask successful entries to provide full paper(s). The abstracts and papers will be peer reviewed and those papers accepted will be presented at the Congress. Full papers and associated presentations will also be published electronically and be available post Congress.

Themes

1. International green roof case studies

Outstanding international examples of projects whether intensive or extensive green roofs or those roofs that deliver multiple benefits as outlined in the London Plan [Policy 4 A 11].

2. British green roof case studies

Terrific examples closer to home of green roof and green wall projects delivering multiple benefits and overcoming challenges of delivery.

3. Policy and regulations for green roofs

We are looking for papers that provide an overview of the development of policy and regulations to support the delivery of green roofs.

4. Up on the roof – urban agriculture, amenity and place making

We would like papers based on live projects that demonstrate innovative uses of green roofs, including food production, community and educational benefits. We look forward to seeing papers that demonstrate the delivery of multiple benefits eg rainwater harvesting, biodiversity etc.

5. Planting and growing media for green roofs

We would like papers that demonstrate innovative approaches to planting and the development of growing media. We would be particularly interested in covering temperate and Mediterranean climates.

6. Biodiversity benefits

Papers that cover the development of habitats and inclusion of species on green roofs, as well as new approaches to maximising biodiversity benefits.

7. Water management benefits

Papers that cover ways that green roofs and green walls can help manage intense rainfall events. We would also be interested in innovations in water management that combine storage, attenuation, harvesting and amenity benefits.

8. Green roofs and climate change adaptation

Papers that demonstrate performance and provide benefits of green roofs in terms of climate change adaptation covering, thermal comfort issues and managing the urban heat island effect.

9. Retrofitting green roofs

We are keen to have case studies where green roofs have been installed to existing structures, particularly in urbanised areas. We would also welcome papers that demonstrate the design and installation process and how innovation and bespoke approaches can deliver benefits.

10. Delivery of green roofs

Papers that provide an overview of the design, construction, maintenance and management of green roofs. We are particularly interested in approaches that overcome some of the challenges of delivery.

We look forward to receiving your abstracts and should you have any questions about the topics or require related information, please contact Dusty Gedge on dusty@dustygedge.co.uk or Charles Perkin on charles.perkin@ciria.org - tel +44 (0)207 5493300

From the submitted abstracts CIRIA and Livingroofs.org will ask a number of entries to provide a full paper. These papers will be presented at the congress.
